Networking Devices: Hubs, Switches and Routers

If you belong to Information Communication and Technology (ICT) background , most probably you have heard about these devices which are used in Networking field. Here we will briefly discuss  the difference between these three devices.
  • In hub, data is broadcasted to every other port. Hub is Layer 1(i.e Physical Layer) device. Since it transmits incoming data to every other device connected to a port,it consumes more bandwidth. In other words ,it can be said that hubs are not bandwidth efficient.
  •  On the other hand, switches work on Layer 2(i.e Data Link Layer) of Open System Interconnection (OSI) Model. Switches contain the record of MAC address of all devices which are connected to the network. With the help this MAC table it forwards the data packet to a specific device only.
  • Router operates on Layer 3(i.e Network Layer). It keeps the records of a logical address of all connected devices. Here Logical address refers Internet Protocol(IP) address. According to the header information of data packet, it forwards the data.
